Introduction Department of Archaeology

The Department of Archaeology established under the Faculty of Buddhist Studies of the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, is to promote the Buddhist Monastic Archaeology of Sri Lanka and to nourish local and foreign scholars with the knowledge of historical and archaeological heritage of the country.

The Department of Archaeology is one of the most attractive departments in Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka. Our aim is to give theoretical and practical knowledge to undergraduates about Archaeology heritage and train them to be talented scholars with good communication skills. Different Subjects are covered by the degree programme including Theory and methods, Historical chronology, Art and Architecture, Epigraphy and Numismatics, Heritage Managements etc. Workshops, Fieldworks, Site visits and conferences are conducted annually. Our all activities focus to give a strong support for achieving the vision and mission of the University.

Department History

The Department Started offering B.A. (hons.) degree for the first time in 2007. Now it has continued for 18 years. M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree programmers are offered by the Department.

Students Association

The Archaeology Students Association is conducted under the Supervision of the Department. It gives valuable support for subject relevant extra activities and developing unity among students. Puravidya Shastriya Samgrahaya is published annually by the Students Association.
