Research Council

Introduction

The aim of the Research Council is to promote a virtuous research culture and excellence in research in the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka. The activities of the Research Council are aimed at encouraging the staff at various stages of their career and disseminating research findings both locally and globally while attaining the overall objectives of the University. The Research Council is also the policy-making and supervisory body for all kinds of research work at the University at various levels.

The Research Council of the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka was established to promote excellence in research and make significant national and international contributions to the well-being of mankind and the sustainability of economic growth in our country. To fit the changing needs, the Research Council has been moving the focus of its activities from increasing the quantity to improving the quality of research of the University by promoting academics to publish in high-impact journals by financially facilitating them. While extending sincere gratitude to all researchers of the University for their continued high-quality work, I sincerely request the support of all academics for the efforts of the Research Council to reach new heights and set goals by extending their undivided cooperation.

Mission

The Mission of the Research Council of the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka is to promote excellence in research and make a significant contribution to knowledge enhancement and national development for the well-being of mankind by fostering a knowledge-based society with a better understanding of Sri Lanka’s pluralistic religious and cultural environment.

History

The first concept of a research council was tabled in 2014 and started in 2023.

Functions
  • Nurturing a research culture by taking all the policy-making decisions with reference to research work in the University.
  • Taking measures to improve the research carried out by the academics.
  • Facilitating publication of research in high-impact international journals to strengthen the cooperation among academics both within the University and with other local and overseas Universities and research institutes.
  • Encouraging multidisciplinary research as it has become the trend in the world now, while paying the foremost attention to Buddhist research works.
  • Enhancing the standards of the research work undertaken by the staff members.
  • Taking steps to improve the accessibility of the research findings of the University academics.
  • Encouraging, facilitating, and monitoring the research publications of the University.
  • Rewarding researchers at the University.
  • Advising on external research grants, particularly for post-graduate studies in foreign universities.
  • Being the active and responsible entity of the University for all research-relevant matters.
  • Managing all kinds of research-relevant publications to increase efficiency and enhance the University’s research culture.
  • Recommending the Finance Branch to allocate funds for the functions of the RC in accordance with its annual budget.
  • Overseeing the management of external funds received by the RC.

  1. The Chairperson, who has an excellent research record in various disciplines appointed by the Vice-Chancellor (This designation also has to be impartial, well-informed, a mature researcher who has both local and foreign research experiences, fluent in both Sinhala and English, a permanent senior staff member).
  2. Three other nominees of the Vice-Chancellor who are members of the Academic Staff of the University, and have an excellent research record
