“Voice of the Dhamma” Final Competition – 2024
Training Programme for Buddhist Monks and Nuns to Preach the Dhamma in English

The Department of English, Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, successfully conducted the Final Competition of the “Voice of the Dhamma” Programme on 6th September 2024. This programme aims to train Sri Lankan Buddhist monks and nuns in disseminating the Dhamma in English, helping them become proficient Dhamma preachers on an international stage. The competition was open for all the local or foreign Buddhist monk/nun studying in any higher educational institute (external or internal), Colleges of Education, and Teacher Training Institutes in Sri Lanka.
The competition took place from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Library Auditorium of the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka. Student monks from the following universities registered for this event:
University of Colombo
University of Peradeniya
Bhiksu University of Sri Lanka
University of Kelaniya
Sri Lanka International Buddhist Academy
Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka
A total of 16 monks competed in the final round, showcasing their skills in delivering Dhamma discourses in English. This event provided an excellent platform for young monks to develop their preaching abilities and to gain valuable feedback from esteemed educators. The Judges of the competition were, Ven. Prof. Raluwe Padmasiri Thero, Department of Buddhist Philosophy at the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies of the University of Kelaniya and Ven. Akuresse Saddhammananda Thero, a renowned Dhamma preacher and a meditation practitioner of Gnanarama Meditation Centre, Thalawathugoda.
The Vice Chancellor of the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka, along with the Dean of the Faculty of Language Studies, academic heads, professors, academic staff members, the Librarian, Registrar, Bursar, and students from all academic years, honored the inauguration ceremony of the programme with their presence.
