Bachelor of Arts General (External) Degree Programme

The Bachelor of Arts General (External) Degree Programme is conducted by the Faculties of Language Studies and Buddhist Studies of the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka. All the activities pertaining to the registration of candidates for the Bachelor of Arts General (External) Degree Programme up to the award of Degrees are conducted by the Post Graduate Studies and Centre for External Examinations Centre of this University, Situated No 214, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 07.

The Administrative Structure of the University applicable to the Degree Programme

All the academic and administration activities pertaining to the external Degree Programmes are conducted subjected to the provisions of the act of Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka and all the powers for functioning in that regard have been delegated to the following Authorities.

  • Council of the university
  • Senate
  • Faculty Boards
  • Departments of Studies
  • External Degree Committee
  • Examination Inquiry Committee
  • Inquiry Committee on Examination Irregularities

Qualifications required for registering for the Bachelor of Arts General (External) Degree

For Local Students 

  • Should have passed Prachina Prarambha.

or

  • Should have passed three subjects at the Advanced Level examination in any subject stream and obtained a minimum of 30 marks in the Common General Test. (Passing the Advanced Level examination with a Buddhist subject, or with one of the subjects such as Pali, Sanskrit, Sinhala, or History, will be considered a special qualification.)

or

  • Should have obtained a degree from a recognized university (local or international) or possess any other qualification accepted by the senate of this university as equivalent to the above.

or

  • Should have passed Higher Diploma in Buddhism / Pali / Sanskrit / English / Tamil / Buddhist Heritage conducted by the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka.

or

  • Should have passed the Daham Sarasaviya Diploma in Buddhism conducted by the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka or University of Sri Jayewardenepura and gained teaching experience at a Dhamma School.

or

  • Should have at least two years of permanent teaching experience as a school teacher or a Pirivena teacher (With basic qualifications)

or

  • Should have passed any other examination that the Senate of the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka considers equivalent to the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) examination.

For Foreign Students 

  • Should have obtained one of the above qualifications specified under 1-7 for local students.

 or

  • Must have passed the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) Examination conducted by the University of London or hold any other equivalent qualifications accepted by the Senate of the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka.

Note:

   All local applicants must pass the final examination or the G.C.E. (Ordinary Level) examination with six subjects, including Sinhala or Tamil, and achieve at least three distinctions.

Subjects prescribed for the Bachelor of Arts (General) External Degree Programme

  • Pali, Buddhist Philosophy, Buddhist Culture,  Archaeology, Religious Studies and Comparative Philosophy, Buddhist Social Work, Buddhist Phycology and Counselling, Sinhala, Sanskrit, English, Tamil 

Procedure of Registration

Candidates who fulfil the specified educational qualifications are registered for the Bachelor of Arts General (External) Examination in every year subsequent to inviting applications through publishing a newspaper advertisement and up loading in the web site of the University. The candidates are strictly instructed to apply using only the applications issued by The Center for Postgraduate Degrees and External Examinations of the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka and downloaded by the web site of the University and it is the responsibility of the candidates to make arrangements to obtain the relevant applications earlier. The qualifications indicated above will be considered in sequence in the determination of the number of students registered annually and the Senate of the University reserves the final authority to determine the number of students registered for the course of study.

Age Limit

Only those who are over 18 years of age are eligible to forward their applications for the registration in relation to the External Examinations and it is compulsory to submit an original copy of the birth certificate along with the application for substantiating the age.

Medium of Study

The External Degree Programme is conducted in the Sinhala and English Language media and applicants are allowed to select one language medium out of the two languages. If an applicant wishes to alter the selected language medium, he/she is allowed to do so within one month subsequent to the registration and subsequently, applicants are not allowed to alter his/her language medium under any circumstances.
