Venue The retreat will take place from 21st April 2023 to 30th April 2023, at Ridee Viharaya, Kurunegala (https://rideeviharaya.lk/index.php) which is a serene location appropriate for relaxation. Kurunegala, located in the central-western region of Sri Lanka, is a town surrounded by mountains that once functioned as strongholds during its early history. In the 14th century, Kurunegala served as the Sinhalese kingdom's capital and holds a significant place in Sri Lankan Buddhist history, as it is recognized for being home to numerous meditation monks, including arahants. Arahant Maliyadeva, one of the last identified Maha Arahants in Sri Lanka, lived in the Mandalaramaka temple in Kurunegala district, around 6 AD. |
One notable attraction in Kurunegala is Ridi Vihara, or the "silver monastery," located about 12 miles (20 km) northeast of the town (GFPR+R9V, Ridee Vihara Rd, Ridigama) where the retreat will be taking place. This monastery was founded on the site of a silver vein dating back to 100 BCE. Once inhabited by meditating monks, the rocky hillside where the shrine of Ridi Vihara stands today had its beginnings as a series of cave dwellings which had been donated to the meditation monks during the early days of Buddhism. At one point, it was believed that nearly 500 priests resided in the caves on the hillside of Ridee Vihara. This is an ideal temple for a meditation retreat as it is situated in a peaceful and serene environment, surrounded by natural beauty. The temple is free from noise and other distractions, allowing practitioners to fully focus on their meditation practice. The temple is also spacious and well-ventilated meditation halls that are comfortable and conducive to meditation. |
Whether you're a seasoned meditator or a beginner, this retreat is a wonderful opportunity to deepen your practice and recharge your spirit. Don't miss out on this chance to slow down, reflect, and find inner balance. |
